ABOUT

I am really not very good with writing bios, but I know you would probably like to know something about me, because I like reading about other artists when I visit their websites too.

So… Rather than agonise over what to put in, what to leave out, I decided to do an interview with myself. I’ll use the same questions I use to interview fellow artists on deviantArt, but I’ll answer them this time, should be fun :)

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

Eclectic and always fluctuating between writing and photography. This sometimes feels like a game of tug of war, but the tension keeps me balanced. I spent many years not doing art so I feel there is so much I want to do.

What is your background?

In art I am self-taught. Personally – I left former Yugoslavia when the war started and since then I’ve lived in Australia and now in UK.

When did you become first interested in art?

When my mum took me to a ballet class as a small girl. Soon it became apparent I was no ballet material, but I have been captivated by art and beauty ever since.

What themes do you pursue?

I like showing the beauty in nature, and that is sometimes very easy and sometimes quite challenging. I value high aesthetic and strive for it in my art because i believe quality is beautiful. I also love magical and feminine.

Where do your ideas come from? What inspires you?

A lot of inspiration has come from my obsession with achieving perfect technique, proving to myself that I can do something and managing to balance out strict control and total lack of it. I don’t like rules, boundaries and limitations, so surpassing them in art is always a part of it for me. Mastering the technique or managing to get the courage to look deeply into the idea, so that I feel no restriction anymore. That’s when I manage to achieve the best results.
And yet sometimes, it’s just a lucky capture that turns out perfectly despite my compulsive overthinking! That’s in a way my favourite because it feels so liberating :) )

What role does the artist have in society?

I think the artist is the driving force behind the evolution of society. We live in the age of materialism where it is commonly believed that technology drives progress, but if you look at the history, it is the vision of writers, philosophers, painters and other artists that quietly and with no force brings about the shift in collective consciousness.

Describe your favourite artwork of all time.

I could not possibly choose only one favourite. But there is an object that has captivated my imagination for a long time. It’s an archeological find called the Sun Disc of Nebra. At 3600 years old, it represents the oldest accurate image of the night sky.

I would love to have a pendant of this design so if you are making – let me know!

Name three artists you’d like to be compared to.

I deeply admire many, but am not sure who I would like to be compared to. I would like to write a character as awesome as Sherlock Holmes and to take pictures as mesmerising and communicative as Helmut Newton’s.

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?

I worked as an interpreter, a waitress, a nanny and a doctor.

What is an artistic outlook on life?

It’s a compulsion to keep creating and view all things in terms of their creative potential.

Is the artistic life lonely?

It can be, especially when one is not surrounded by other artists. But these days, the internet has enabled us to gather in online communities and it really isn’t lonely anymore. Solitude is still necessary for many artists in order to create, but that is not loneliness.

What makes you angry?

Cruelty and ignorance most of all.

What do you like and dislike about your work?

I like the colours and playfulness, but I dislike the fact that I still haven’t managed to do a proper “moody” or “minimal”. It’s an issue I’m trying to address :D

What motivates you to keep creating?

Not creating is just not an option, it’s a need and to stop creating would most certainly make me feel so miserable that I suppose, avoiding being miserable motivates me to keep doing it.

Describe yourself in 5 words.

Complicated, empathic, ambitious, imaginative, intuitive.

What superpower would you like to have and why?

I’d like a power to live forever because I am really curious to see this world in the distant future.

What are some of your favourite movies and books?

Movies – Secrets and Lies, Kill Bill, Big Lebowski, anything Almodovar or Allen

Books – The Witching Hour, Dracula, Dune, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Crime and Punishment, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

What kind of music do you like?

I have a pretty eclectic taste but some of my all-time favourites are PJ Harvey, Tom Waits, Nick Cave and Nina Simone

What’s your favourite food and drink?

What kid’s birthday party dreams are made of –  cake and cherry juice!

Favourite (or most inspirational) place?

My little island in Adriatic sea

What is your dream project?

To be involved with a movie that is being made based on my book.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Be patient and stay true to yourself.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?

Living with my family in a beautiful house by the sea, writing my third bestselling novel, still photographing for pleasure

What advice would you give to an aspiring artist?

Do your best to follow your dreams and never give up.

Is there anything else you’d like to say?

Just a big “Hello and thank you for helping me learn so much from you” to all my fellow artists at deviantArt, flickr and redbubble

You can find me on all these sites under nickname “photofairy”.
